If I place an iMac on a desk in a carpeted room will it clog up with dust and start causing stress on the fans after a few months then have to spend $$ taking it to apple for a clean so no warranty void?

I have been using an iMac in a household with pets with no problems since 2007. Just be vigilant and dust underneath it (when it is turned off of course) every couple of weeks and you will be fine.

If you are at all concerned with dust from a health perspective, you can get free-standing air filters/ionisers at many home appliance stores and e-shops.

Not really. My system is in a carpeted room (18 months), and as of yet know problems.

Over the past twenty-three years I have had a Mac located in carpeted rooms with no problem. For six of those years I lived out in the Arizona Outback where we were subjected to heavy dust storm at least several days out each month, and still know problems.:)
