i have a imac and i wanted to connect to my old dell crt monitor but the imac says its connected but nothing shows up on the dell monitor. what can i do to make it work

Maybe the resolution isn't supported. Can you change the output resolution and see if others work? Try 1024 x 768, 800 x 600 and 640 x 480 if that is possible. Don't know whether you can or how to do that as I've never had a mac, I'm afraid.

did you click the "detect displays" button in the display preferences?

The included mini displayport to dvi adapter is digital only. Using a dvi to vga adapter will physically fit, but the pins and signal aren't there to get the crt to display.

The only way to make a vga monitor display a picture from the mini displayport is via Apple's mini displayport to vga adapter.
