(macOS High Sierra)

My iMac connects to the internet but it can't load anything involving an internet connection. At first I thought it was something wrong with the DNS so I changed it from 1.1.1.1 to my ISP given DNS but that didn't do anything. (I also tried 8.8.8.8) Next, I decided to renew my DHCP lease but that also did nothing. As a last resort I decided to spoof my mac address but that also failed.

I assumed something was wrong with my router but that's not the case because I tried connecting to my personal hotspot and I still got the same error. I am so confused and any help would be appreciated!

You say you are connected to the internet...
What do you see in your Network pref pane?
What IP address is showing?
What setting are you using for "Configure IPv4"
For most, that should be "Using DHCP"

If all looks good in your Network settings - is there any difference if you try Safari, instead of Chrome?

Looks all good. I've tried opening in Safari and Firefox and webpages don't load. I also tried opening an application that uses the internet (App Store)

If you can't load any pages (go to any websites), then you are not connected to the internet. It's that simple.
If all of your settings seem good (and -- other-- devices or computers can use the same internet connection), have you tried restarting your iMac, then restarting modem/router (both, if modem and router are separate devices)?

Yeah I reset my modem and router. I tried everything I can think of and can't figure it out so I'll just hard reset and pray. Even connecting my hotspot doesn't let me access the internet so I think there is something else at play.

There can be a few reasons why you are not connecting and the most obvious being that the service you are using is down. If you have access to the admin of your modem (or modem router) you should check the "WAN" or similar setting to see if the modem itself is connected to your provider. Similarly, you may want to check if your router is set up correctly and sees your modem properly (also a function of logging in as admin).

Just wanted to chime in that I've had a similar issue for quite some time now. Every now & then, my MacBook (or less frequently my phone or iPad) will stop connecting to the internet. I can't view any web pages, they just spin. If I open up a second browser & try using that, it also doesn't work, but it always comes back online somewhere between 5-10 minutes later.

I can use any other device on the network during that downtime (iPad, iPhone, work computer) but the MacBook just won't connect.
