iMac constantly logging itself out

Have an older 800 mHz flat panel iMac on 10.3.9, whenever I try and throw something away, send email, and a host of other actions the screen will go blue and the desktop will start up again as if I logged out and then back in. I've tried rebooting, repairing permissions, and running the unix maintenance. I also made a second account, logged in with it and it did the same thing, only with the second account it would just log out and kick me back to the login page. The admin account still just logs out/logs in in one motion. Anyone ever hear of this?

Looks like it logged you out because the Login Window is crashing.

You can either look at that crashlog for clues, or try removing the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist, restarting, and seeing if it's still crashing and logging you out.

Tried getting rid of that file, didn't work unfortunately. Any clues on what to look for in the crash log? It's huge but all I can really make out is this

I think so, this is my parent's computer and they said sometime last week they ran software update and there was a whole bunch of updates it downloaded. It must have updated to 10.3.9 then but I'm not positive, for some reason the list of installed updates under the software update preference panel is completely empty.

And you removed the com.apple.loginwindow.plist from the root Library, right, not from the Library that's in your home folder?

I notice that "com.apple.iSightAudio 6.5.2" is listed there.. did you try unplugging that to see if the problem goes away? Have you gotten the latest iSight updater from Apple? Have you run Software Updater again to see if there's anything else you might need to update?

One other thing you could try was to download the 10.3.9 Combo Updater and reinstall it again. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html

The crash log suggests to me that the problem is produced when loginWindow tries to play a sound. The problem stems from the module audio.toolbox.AudioToolbox and the function AUGraphNewNode and ultimately results in an overflow or something in the formatted string writing function _swrite. I don't know why loginWindow would want to play a sound, but maybe loginWindow is responsible for more tasks than just the login for all I know.

Do you also have TinkerTool installed? If so, have you added sounds effects to some actions? Shame on you for using TinkerTool These kinds of system hack tools has been shown to often cause problems when the OS is upgraded later on.

I'm not one hundred percent sure about this analysis, so take it for what it's worth.

Yeah, that is the one I got rid of, no dice.

I don't know what the iSight thing is about seeing as how they don't own an iSight, and there is no TinkerTool or anything on that machine. Parent's computer, it is all of a few web browsers, email, and some photos. Its so strange, it will log out/in when trying to say, send mail, move something to the trash (but when not emptying the trash), and copying text or a file. Probably more but that is what I've run into.

There was nothing else in Software Update either except for Quicktime 7. I'll give the combo updater a try.
