iMac Cooling questions

My iMac is only about two years old. I dont really hear a fan running. Should I be able to hear a fan easily? Now that I think of it, I really don't ever recall hearing any fan run. The reason I ask is, the top of my computer gets very hot and after time the top of my screen starts to have black streaks on the top left side and the top of the browser temporarily gets burned into the screen. These smudges, images, and/or streaks go away when the computer is shutdown or after idle time when the computer is not running (basically when it cools off). I know this is probably a dumb question but I figure I need to ask this. Is there a setting anywhere on my iMac for the fan? :eek: Other than that, how can I verify that it is working?

Do you have iStat or SMC fan control? Either can tell you the fan speed and allow you to adjust it. Normally you cannot hear the fans on an iMac unless the CPU is running really hot and then they speed up.

Ok, thanks! I just downloaded the SMC one and installed it. I set all my fans on the min medium speed. I'll give this a try and let you know if that takes care of it. It did say for some reason that it hasn't been tested on my machine but it should still work. It seems to be working b/c I see the temp and fan speed up top. It is jumping between 93F and 102F. Any idea if that is normal or what the normal operating temp should be? :D

That's definitely cool enough. My MacBook is running at ~130F while just browsing, so those temps are great.

well my 2009 iMac is currently converting an .mkv for TV using QT7 pro - this is what i'm seeing

Ok great. Thanks everyone! I wish I would have known about this a long time ago before the burned images problem. LOL Hopefully the remainder of the images I am seeing will go away in time. :D If not, is that burned onto the screen that I can touch or is there another screen inside that may need replacing? It actually is staying around 88F-93F now. =)
