I got a 17" iMac Core Duo a few days ago to replace my iBook G4.

While I've noticed that the iMac boots MUCH quicker it takes over 30 seconds to shut down regardless of how many apps I have running.

It's got 1GB of factory installed RAM, I'm using Airport but no Bluetooth devices and nothing else is connected.

I have done the usual Mac maintenance steps.

Is this "normal"? My iBook shuts down in 15 seconds or so...

Well the only time I turn my Intel iMac off is if I'm going out for the day and there's a storm in the area.
Back to the OP it takes mine a few seconds more than my iBook but to me shutdown time doesn't really matter as much as start-up time does. Maybe you should try sleep mode but I wouldn't really worry about it as in a problem with your iMac.

I turned off my Mac to move it and noticed the potential "problem".

I certainly use sleep for my iBook and intend to with my iMac but I would like to get any issues and troubleshooting that might require a talk to applecare out of the way as quickly as possible!

People....turn...off....their macs? Since when?

Exactly. I just checked the uptime on mine and it says 14 days, but it has really been longer than that...I had to reboot after installing the 10.4.5 update.

Aye, I know there's no need to reboot but that wasn't really my question. :)

I don't think it's a real issue what the shutdown time is. If you're missing data or it has erratic behavior when it's running, then I would be concerned.

Mine does the same thing. If you log out before you shut down though it's much faster.
Especially if you have FileVault turned on and it wants to clean up your user drive each time, which can take up to 10 minutes to do.

Just a small update...

Made sure Filevault was turned off, confirmed that it wasn't my user account and did the usual maintenance voodoo again. I even tried eliminating Airport, Bluetooth etc. The ONLY difference from the stock 17" in my system is 1GB of RAM that was factory installed.

The "problem" persists... If I shutdown it takes 35 seconds, if I log out and shut down it's almost instant, if I reboot it's almost instant.

Since it's new and my files aren't on it yet I bit the bullet and reinstalled.

Mac OS 10.4.4 -> Problem is not there AT ALL
Max OS 10.4.5 -> Problem is back again

I'm going to do a bit more research, log a ticket with Applecare and forget about it I think. Life's too short.

If it means anything, mine took exactly 1 minute to restart the other day.

What version are you on and is it consistantly slow to shut down or only sometimes?
