I just got my 17" iMac last Sunday and I was so happy. After transferring all of my stuff from my iBook (music, photos, etc), I tried to install WoW and the Superdrive started making a ton of weird and loud noises. Argh. Then, you had to keep trying to put the CD in, cuz it kept spitting them back out. So I talked to an Apple agent online and they told me to "Verify disk permissions" and repair them. So far, so good but it wasn't too long before it acted up again. The next agent told me to hold down Apple, Option, P and R upon boot up and that I would hear 2 chimes. This reset the NVRAM (?) . The Superdrive worked again for a few more hours and now it is doing the same thing.

So I gotta take it back to the Apple store tomorrow and exchange it out. All that time I spent on transferring things and getting things the way I wanted them . . . :(

Anyone had this problem or heard of it?

BTW, I was in the middle of creating a small review podcasts so be looking for that! :D

You may be surprised, as this is normal. If it is making weird noises and spiiting it out, your disk is probably bad(no not Macintosh HD) the CD. I had a really dirty CD and was trying to use it, I put it in, made weird noises and spit it out. Then i realized it had a gob of something on it and was very scratched.

Hope this helbed

Well, I took my iMac back to the Apple store and they were glad to give me a replacement. Talk about a huge difference in the Superdrive sounds. This thing is QUIET. I'm updated the beast yet again and will hopefully have it up and running again. Thanks for the 1 reply!!! LOL jk. I still love this place.

I got my 20" Intel iMac back in February and the SD was a DOA (it took the dvd and never gave it back) but before that it wouldn't read, then would with lots of noise...you know it yourself though. Apple replaced the SD and it's been very good, quiet and runs like it should. There are many posts about this on the Apple support page but Apple does fix the problem it's just a small let-down after getting it and setting it up just how you want it and then "hangs head down".
Glad they gave you a new one to enjoy :D
