Have you guys checked out the new hardware monitor 4.0 yet? Apparently, on my iMac Core Duo (yonah) it has a new sensor called "graphics processor temperature diode". Originally, I thought there wasn't a temp monitor for the iMac's x1600. Anyhow, I'm getting 59C (138F) at idle, which is pretty hot, compared to a cpu temp of about 25C/28C at idle.
Given such a high gpu temperature at idle, is it safe to overclock the graphics chip at all? What gpu temperatures have you guys been getting on your imacs?

I've clocked my video card to 470/470 on the Windows side for hours of gaming. It's a little warmer on the case but I haven't had a single crash yet.

I've been running the Halo (UB) timedemo in a window at max settings (8xAA, highest settings at 1440x900), and the graphics temperature diode rose to as high as 76C, or 168F. This is on OSX w/o an overclock. This is already quite high imo, an overclock on the windows side to 470/470 would probably bring it 10C + higher.
Previously, I've overclocked my gpu in windows to 450/440...but now i'm having second thoughts...
Also, I forgot to mention that I did change the thermal paste on my iMac cpu and gpu to arctic silver 5, which probably means that people with stock thermal paste will report temperatures a few degrees higher...:(
I haven't had a single crash yet either...but considering the temperature and the long term effects...

I'm getting about 50 degrees Celsius. I was also thinking about overclocking on the windows side but i dont really know how. By the way how did you get yours to read in farenheit?

Is it possible to open the iMac and stick a better/bigger heatsink on the gpu?

racer.
(Ordered my 20' iMac on Friday and waiting for it to arrive).

You can get it to read in fahrenheit by going to preferences->general->temperature unit: degrees Fahrenheit.
Is everybody getting around 50 degrees C idle (meaning the computer has been sitting idly --not sleeping-- for 3+ hours. I'm getting about 50C at boot, but the temperature increases over time) with the first-revision iMac Core Duo? I changed the thermal paste on my computer and I'm getting 61C idle .

As for improving a heatsink. No. I opened up the iMac. It's cooled passively with a heat sink about 3 inches long, 1.5 inches wide, and about a cm deep. there's no space for a bigger hsf, and the hard drive fan is right underneath (or above it. the cpu and graphics chip are located facing the back of the imac).

Also, I know there's a program to change fan speeds for the macbook pro, but is there one available for the iMac?
