It is my understanding from a little research that the early Intel iMac (core duo) has a socket CPU that can be upgraded. I am told that you can upgrade the core duo to a core 2 duo with a little work on the inside. I have come across a few discussions online, but I want to know if there is anyone on this forum that has actually done this... If not any recommendations?

go find a maclife hardware book, they have a step by step walkthrough for the process....i just bought the book with it in there about a week ago, so it should still be on store shelves

Thanks, I will pick it up tomorrow. The real question is not how to do it so much as has anyone on this forum done it? How was it, any problems occur?

i dont know, but in the walkthrough it basically for liabilities sake, says DO NOT DO THIS!!!

Yep...

If you bought Apple Care, cash it in before you try it since Apple Care is basically worthless once you update the in the iMac.

There is no real work to do other than properly taking it apart and putting it back together. The core2duo chips plug right in. You do have to re-glue the heat sink from what I remember. Not a big deal, you just need to get the correct tools / heatsink paste before starting the project.

Do a search for iMac disassembly on google, or here on mac rumors or even on anandtech for step by step instructions.

If your going to open it up, re-think the hard drive and the Wireless card. You can use the wireless "N" card for the Mac Pro, and you might as well upgrade the hard drive while your in there.

One negative affect of Apple on Intel, is that the mobile chip prices haven't budged all that much since their introduction. I'm still waiting for a moderately priced core2 chip to replace mine.

Some of the Authorized repair centers will do some of these upgrades for you, of course they are going to charge you, but you will keep your warranty from what I understand.
