I knocked over my new Aluminum iMac 20", and when I put it back on my desk, there it was, the glass had cracks in it :eek::eek:

The screen is fine, I used a suction to pull of the black border/glass, and it works fine without it, but I would really like to get that glossy look/black border back again. Does anyone know where to get that part? Thanks.

P.S. I've checked eBay, and it would be a great help if you could point me to some Mac part sites. Thanks!

lol.. yeah. I will. Umm, do you know of where I can get new casing or that glass?

come on, guys. I really need that bezel, or a brand new aluminum casing for that matter. Thanks.

Ouch -. I'd say at this time, only Apple would have a readily available source for these parts. You could try contacting an authorized repair center too, but I doubt that this part breaks often so spares might be hard to come by.

Good luck!

edit - try googling the search term "authorized mac parts". I found these guys. I don't recommend or endorse them - I've never heard of them, but they might be a starting point

I had a dream that my iMac's screen smashed like glass (this was before the alum&glass ones were released, so I felt kinda like Joseph when Apple released them in August!) so now I'm extra conscious to make sure I don't smash it! Ouch for you, though! D:

I doubt this happens often so if I were you, call Applecare and ask then what to do. They might send you a new one (you'll probably be charged, though!). Who knows? But call Apple. They'll know what to do.

I have not used DT&T, but have heard from others that they are reputable for Powerbook repairs.

Sorry it's 2nd hand but that's all I got. :D:apple:

I'm afraid that's going to be a very expensive part that you will probably only be able to get from Apple at this point.

More importantly did you say that your LCD panel is OK? Someone in another thread who services iMacs mentioned accidentally scratching the LCD panel of one when he didn't notice the glass panel had a crack. The panel is $860 (at least for the 24" iMac)!

I just recently had the LCD panel on my 24" iMac replaced under AppleCare because I noticed a faint scratch on the panel. They scratch easily so you really want to keep them covered. Mine apparently occurred at the assembly plant before the glass was applied.

Good luck.

Do you mean that the LCD was $860?! The LCD works perfectly, no scratches or scuffs. All I need is the glass covering.. Was the glass $860?

Well, mine was free of charge under AppleCare but I was referring to the cost of the LCD panel. Sorry, I don't know how much the glass goes for. I do know the LCD panel is the single most expensive part of an iMac.

I would only be guessing at a cost but I wouldn't be surprised if they asked $200 to $300. Give Apple a ring and see.

Query: Why didn't you take it to the Apple store or call Apple support and let them deal with it? By this time you must have dust all over the LCD.

The glass is not expensive, but if I were you find an independent Apple repair center. A retail Apple Store may void your warranty. Glass should be about $100-$200 plus labor.

How would a retail apple store void the warranty by repairing, if they're actually a division of apple.

Anyways be prepared to fork out a lot of money, I find that the Apple Store charges a lot more for repairs than other authorized repair centres. I remember once i had to get a hard drive replaced Out of Warranty and Apple Charged 200 dollars more than a authorized repair centre.

Call the Apple Store and ask them for the closest ...

AUTHORIZED Apple Repair Center

We tried to buy a part for our Macbook - Apple Store refused to sell us the part. But the Apple repair center ( CompUSA ) was more than happy to order the part and sell it to us.

I would cover it up until you get the part. Putting it in should be easy but ---> BE CAREFUL

And yeah the LCD should be cleaned as well --- be careful there as well

Not sure about the LCD panels in these computers but some tend to be DUST MAGNETS especially when power is applied/removed.

Yeah, dust is particularly troublesome once you attempt to put the glass panel back on since every particle that gets trapped between the glass and the LCD is like a dead pixel that shines and flickers.

You definitely want to send it back to Apple to do the installation.

Just take it to an Apple Store.

1. It is not expensive, I would ask to waive the labor, since it is easy a hell.

2. LCD should be fine and although this won't b covered by warranty, getting it repaired won't void it.

3. Protect the screen, clean it with a screen cleaner, nothing abrasive, you'll be fine.

Ok... I'll call Apple Monday morning. Thanks for all of the responses! If Apple charges $200, I'll go to an Authorized Apple Repair Center... If it's only $0-150, I'll just let them do it. Thanks again! :D

Using suction cups it is easy in terms of the operation itself. However, keep in mind that Apple does this process in a zero-dust environment. As I mentioned above you get one single particle of dust between the glass and the LCD and you are going to notice it very easily.

Please refer here for the comments of the technician I mentioned above.

The same thing happened to me. It cost me £18 ($36) to replace the glass panel at my nearest Apple Store in London. The Genius was very kind and decided to waive the labour charge (£45), as the repair is apparently super easy.

And people say Apple has bad customer service!? Pah!

Maybe in America... but certainly not over here in England! haha!

Wow, that is MUCH cheaper than I expected Apple to ask for the glass! As I keep stressing, the "repair" is easy but you want to do it in a dust-controlled environment.
