I have a brand new 2.8 iMac and it's working fine except for this one issue. Would appreciate if some of you could try out the same scenario and let me know if it happens to you as well, as I'm only concerned if it's just my machine.
The noise can be described as a quiet crackling, buzzing or ticking, coming directly from the top left of the iMac near the air vent. The noise only occurs shortly after the display goes to sleep, but not when the entire computer is asleep. It disappears when the display is turned back on. Sometimes it's intermittent, and sometimes it's always there... but it's not a constant noise like a fan or a hum, it's more like a static kind of sound. It's not coming from the speakers, and changing the brightness level while the display is on does not cause it to happen.
I found one similar post on the Apple board, but no responses: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7187072
To try it quickly, you can open up your Expose preferences and set your display to sleep when moving the mouse to one of the corners of the screen. Then once the display is off, wait about 5-10 seconds and put your ear close to the top left of the case to make sure it's not drowned out by ambient noise.
Your help is appreciated!
