iMac crashed after attempting to install Sierra

I have a late 2012 i7 3.4ghz with 24gb ram and 3tb fusion drive running El Capitan 10.11.6

I attempted to update to Sierra (not High Sierra) on Friday and after sitting on a black screen, not doing anything for 3 hours I shutdown. When I booted back up I received an error and the drive would not load. I ended up having to restore from my time machine backup that took about 9 hours. Before attempting to upgrade again I was wondering if anyone has any idea why this happened. thanks for your time...

Try uninstalling the software mentioned in the crash log. Symantec, USB overdrive, Boom 2 device, VMware etc.

Once the installation worked, try reinstalling them one by one using the latest version of each.

My standard, "boilerplate" suggestion:

Create a bootable USB flashdrive version of the installer, and boot the Mac using it, then try to install that way.

I recommend using a flashdrive of 16gb (8gb might work, you can give it a try if that's all you have). Erase it to "Mac OS Extended with journaling enabled".

I suggest the small, free app called "Boot Buddy" to create the installer.

Doing it this way just seems to go easier...

Thank you both for the suggestions. Shortly after I recovered the drive I crashed again but was able to determine it was Symantec, which I removed immediately. Since I have upgraded the OS before without a problem, I am thinking that Symantec may have been the culprit. Prior to that I ran Avast, which covered my daughters and wife's PC's, but when they doubled the subscription price I went with Symantec since it was free from Comcast.

I'm just coming off a 24/7 coverage detail so I hope to get to trying this in a week or so, I need to get my brain a rest.
