Right, lets look at the background. Back in 1999 I bought my first Mac, an iMac DV SE in graphite. It was a great machine but doged with problems, too many for me to go into. About 2 years ago I bought a PowerMac G4 and later a PowerBook. This left my iMac sat around collecting dust. Its a shame as it really is a great design.

So this is what I am planning on doing:

Removing the CRT which was dead ish (OK the whole screen was pink!). This will be replaced with a high resolution 15" LCD which I will have to spec to make sure the diagonal size is about right. This is be stripped from its case and inserted into the iMac. The only slight issue that I have is the CRT is curved whilst the LCD is flat. This will require some clear epoxy filler but hopefully it wont look too bad.

Now the insides... This is totally shot. The analogue board is tempermental, changed numerous times so that is going, also the modem is gone thanks to a bolt of lightening. Right this is going to be replaced with a mac mini, not sure which one, I will have to see what my budget will stretch to. I imagine that with some additional supports I will be able to mount a new slot loading drive. Everything else should be easy to fit. I intend to use the iMac's built in speakers and microphone so some small electronic converson boards will be required, but nothing too technical. Also a few jumper cables from the mac mini logic board to the output port on the iMac may be needed.

Also a small power supply convertor will be needed for the monitor and the mac mini.

Anyone have any suggestions / ideas please let me know. I will take photos as I go and hopefully post them on here soon.

Good luck. Be very careful dealing with that CRT monitor... those can carry enough electrical charge to kill someone, even if they haven't been turned on in many months.

The CRT is long gone now. I am an electronics engineer by trade so I have all the equipment needed

Not trying to bump my posts, but out of interest, how much do people think this finished mod would be if I went with a bottom of the range intel mac mini? I dont have any interest in selling but I am just curious.
