iMac display problem with blacks

I just bought an iMac and noticed that when it is displaying pure blacks there are very faint horizontal bars going through it. It is not very noticeable front on but from underneath the screen you can tell the black has these light bars through it. Almost as if it could be some effect from the coating of the screen too.

Can someone tell me if this just the quality of the imac screen or a problem with my machine? thanks!

its pretty normal but u could take it back and swap it out
 
The title of this thread is, read in a different light, sort of racist. I couldn't resist chuckling when I read it. (I know, I'm bad :p).

Your problem could be one of two things - a) your backlight, or b) if you have a 20" imac, an artifact of the 6 bit TN panel emulating an 8-bit panel.

Ok that made me laugh i was thinking the same thing.You have to send that racist imac back to Apple.Like Muncher said its a 6bit tn panel,I miss my white imac 20.Not that i favor the white over black.Nevermind

well i dont have a 20" it is a 24"

looks like maybe just banding or something

Hi Phil - I'm on my second 24 inch imac - Sent the first one back becuse it had back light bleed and a graphics issue - The second one is great apart from when i watch a movie in a dimly lit room and it shows a dark scene I can see little spots of bleed around the screen - do you have this ? is it possible to get a perfect 24 inch screen with no bleed. I when i say bleed i mean no bleed in a dark room with a black screen showing? cheers for reply s - i have 7 days to make my call.

My 32" LCD TV has vertical bars on a black screen when there is no source input going to it... But when there is a source image this goes away. It is not an issue to me as it does not impact normal viewing.

You note that these horizontal bars are not noticeable when viewing from the front, but only from underneath the screen. When will you be viewing a completely black screen from below?

No product is ever going to be perfect because they are made by imperfect people and everybody has a different opinion of what perfect is. If this is the only issue you have with your iMac I would keep it. I think it is normal and chances are if you switch your iMac for another the next one might have an imperfection that bothers you even more.

I have no bleed at all, even in a completely dark room - my screen is absolutely, beautifully, perfect!
Before I got my iMac, I used a Mac Pro with a 23" Cinema Display and I can honestly say that the iMac screen is at least as good, if not better, than the £600 Cinema display.
It's difficult to describe just how stunning it looks, but it is evenly lit, has no dead pixels, bleeding, uneven blacks, etc, etc.
I was a bit concerned about moving to a "consumer level" machine from my Mac Pro / Cinema Display combination but I needn't have been - when you get a good one (as I have), it is jaw droppingly good :D

My 24" is running superbly...sorry to hear you're having problems. If it's a serious and bothersome problem, take it back for sure.
