iMac doesn't read CDs and ejects them

Hello everybody!
I just got my imac from ebay, used but in overall very good condition. It's 24 inch, 3,06 ghz, 4g ram with snow leopard installed and latest updates.
It can read DVDs easily, but when I insert a CD, it makes sound like it's trying to read it and then after few seconds it just ejects it.
Does anybody know what could be the issue here? Hardware or software?Previous owner said that he didn't have problems, but he mostly used DVDs. Could it be that something got damaged during the transport?

Another possible option is that the drive might have been like that with the previous owner. I'm assuming you didn't 'test run' the computer prior to purchasing it. Not not trying to make you weary of the seller but sometimes buyer beware.

I bought my iMac used from a local computer shop. Sale was final and I'm really happy with it. Only thing is, it is spitting out CDs. I can watch DVDs fine and data CDs seem to work but store bought audio CDs are rejected.

I bought a CD cleaner and put it in the drive, it tries to read and then spits it out. I did that a bunch of times and after a while it didn't spit it out and read the cleaner disc! After that my CDs all read fine for about 24 hours.

Suddenly the drive stopped working again. I don't want to take it to an Apple store... but its getting to that. Any answers... Anyone?

all sellers will tell you they never ever had a problem with a item after you bought it and they got the cash and most wont tell you before you bought it
and i doubt the theory of a cd drive getting damaged in transport , the hdd would be far easier and more likely damaged during transport , just get a external saves you opening the iMac
