My Imac used to sleep after the monitor shut off in 15 min. Now the only way to get it into sleep mode is apple menu sleep or option/command/eject. Is there a terminal command to force Ventura to sleep after inactivity? I know it's not sleeping as the external its running from light is blinking. Checking activity monitor shows window server preventing sleep but it sleeps fine when initiated.

Have you tried adjusting the Energy Saver settings? If I understand correctly, your display is shutting off but the iMac is not sleeping. For example, "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off" should be set to off. Also, you mention you have an external drive? I'm not sure if you mean you're booting your iMac from the external drive or not, but you can try setting "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" to "Always".

I've also had this problem for a long time (Ventura on Mac Studio + Dell monitor), and as far as I understand, it's a known issue.

I saw this suggestion somewhere, and I believe it does help to send this command in Terminal every few days (will prompt you to enter your password):

sudo killall powerd

I think it helps restore normal sleep behavior (although I can't vouch for the consistency).

I am on 15.1 Beta 2 and sometimes I have just to enter the password and all apps are still open and sometimes username and password and everything is closed. Feels like it's just random, because I mostly do the same before I go to sleep, what is listening to a downloaded video. I even turn off the router almost every night so nothing internet related could wake the Mac.

I don't use any external display and external drives. Just for doing backups external drives are connected and that doesn't happen while I am sleeping.

"Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is also activated.

Tried this Terminal command now. Let's see if something changes the next days...

P.S.: The slightest movement of my mouse is also waking the iMac. That just came to my mind and could be the cause.

'Put hard disk to sleep'..... is not an option on Ventura. Prevent auto sleep is off.

There was a terminal command that had a timer for inactivity, then to sleep but I lost it.
