I'm looking to get my soon-to-arrive iMac 24" hooked up to my Dell 20" 2007fpw monitor and I have a few questions:

1- What cable exactly do I need? The Dell monitor supports VGA, DVI and S-Video. I don't want to use VGA (already used by xbox 360) but will the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter work? I have no idea how the whole DVI-A, DVI-I, DVI-D thng works, has anyone ever done this on a Dell monitor? Would it be like iMac Mini-DVI > Mini-DVI to DVI > DVI Cable > Monitor?

2- Can I have different resolutions on those 2 monitors? The dell only supports up to 1680x1050, will it work?

Thanks in advance

The video output from the iMac is a miniDVI output, so you'll need an adaptor no matter what. I have a miniDVI to DVI converter bought from the apple store and then just connect that to the DVI cable supplied with the Dell monitor.

Yes, you can have both screens at different resolutions.

You are 100% on target. That adapter will work just fine with that monitor in the setup you envision. And yes, you can set the resolutions of the two displays independently.

I thought iMacs can only do mirror presentation on two screens? I was told that you couldn't use extended desktop...

No...recent iMacs can do both.

Daniel.

That restriction was removed a long time ago. I wouldn't have bought an iMac if it couldn't do dual screens...I have to have at least two to get any work done.
