what type of imac??
EDIT: ALL imacs after the 17" early 2006 model (up to .82ghz processor) can support dual link display and video mirroring.. what type of way do you want to hook it up?? to replicate the imacs screen, or add extra desktop space?
i have a year old 20" iMac 2.16Ghz

ohh ok that will be sweet as to do, just need to grab a dvi capable monitor, or youd have to purchase a vga monitor cable thingo from apple.
yup will be super sweet as, just have to configure it in system prefs>display (resolution, refresh rate etc)

I did this with a samsung 22" lcd to my 2.16 20" imac c2d.
you'll need a mini dvi to dvi (preferably) or a mini dvi to vga adapater.
my imac automatically set it up for spanning and maximum resolution as soon as i plugged it in. you may need to go into system preferences and tell it which side of the imac the screen is on, or reset the resolution.
you'll love it. with lcd's so cheap, and it being so easy to plug an extra monitor into the imac, i wonder why so many people are buying the 24's?

I'm gonna do the same thing. I picked up a 22" Samsung Widescreen monitor just after Thanksgiving at Best Buy for $199. Should provide plenty of screen real estate for video editing, etc.
From what it sounds like, it should be a breeze to set up.

Maybe because of the cheap TN panel used in the current 20" iMac, but I've never liked the look of an external monitor (even ACD) next to an iMac. IMO, it just doesn't look right because of the chin and height differential, even if you get the external monitor to sit at the same height. Too bad another iMac can't be used as a 2nd monitor.
No, the 20" ACD sits 16.1" and the 20" iMac sits 18.5". And people putting the ACDs on stacks of books makes the setup look ridiculous.
yep that is a bit outrageous, apple could have at least made all monitors the same height. my mbp/ext monitor dont match and that doesnt bother me, personal preference really.
The display made me glad I bought a new in box year old 2.16 20" instead of its shiny sister. The black samsung next to it does have a discordant ebony and ivory effect. And the samsung is only sitting on top of ONE phone book, thank you very much! 
And I'm sorry, but I'm really can't say I agree with the 'your external monitor next to your imac looks ridiculous' argument. They're both magnificent displays, and the two of them together are useful as all get out.

Are you using the old "Hockey Puck" mouse for your iMac?, nice.
I'm considering purchasing a 22" widescreen Samsung to hook up to my PowerBook for the time being, but I'm also going to go with the 24" iMac after they get updated. My only concern is how the Samsung will look with the iMac since i'll be using dual displays when I get it, but i'm sure i'll get used to it.
