Hey folks... a co-worker of mine is using a 20" iMac (purchased new earlier this year) and the DVD drive is suddenly inoperable. I cannot put a disc into it at all - I insert the disc, and the mechanism doesn't even pull it in and eject it. I can only insert the disc as far in as I dare, allowing myself a 1/4 inch or so to pull it back out.

A quick look at the Disc Burning section of the system profiler indicates that no burning device is even recognized on this iMac, yet it was working a few weeks ago. This system was recently updated to 10.5.5, and I'd heard a rumor someplace that there was a bug in this release that might affect some optical drives. Has anyone else heard this as well, or does it sound like a simple case of hardware failure?

Any input at all welcomed... thanks!

- Billy

Sounds to me like the drive is totally dead. I'd get your friend to call Apple or bring it into an Apple Store.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was afraid of. Fortunately, it's still under warranty. Thanks.

Hi Billy.
Exactly the same think occurred today to my imac 20" (2,4GHz Intel - 2008). System profiler says there is no burning device!
What about your mac? Did you find out what was the problem?
Thanks a lot,

CRL.

As suspected, the DVD drive was dead. Took it to the Apple Store and they replaced both the drive and the internal cable used to connect it. It's all good now.

IMac 27" DVD drive problem

I am having the same problem. I do not even know if there is a DVD stuck in my drive or if it is just messed up. I cannot put a dvd or cd in.....tried the eject thing, the apple tech had me do....nothing. I have to take it to have repaired. GRRR... Anyone know anything?
