iMac experts, a few questions I would like some insight on

Hello, I am looking at buying a new iMac. I would like to ask those who know their fair share about macs a few questions.

Firstly, with regard to the design, given past upgrades, when would you think the current model will get a re-design. I would be annoyed if i fork out £1000 for apple to bring a new one out, I ask this as i recall seeing something on apple filing a design for a touchscreen mac (could be completely wrong on that and making a fool of myself.)

Secondly, what extra software would you reccomend, I am a university student so need it for work and I enjoy gaming, not that I have ever really got into computer gaming but I am open minded. Any other cool stuff you can tell me is appreciated. :)

it may receive a minor spec bump in 8-11 months.
The chassis design will likely stay the same for another 18+months.

As for software, that depends on what courses you are enrolled in...

Now is a great time to buy.

was the update on july 27th a redesign of the chassis?

This shows all of the imac revisions, dating back to 2006.

If you like to game, you are going to probably want one of the higher end models if you care about performance. Not that all of the imacs aren't somewhat capable, its just some of todays titles can be very demanding and depending on what you play...some of the base models might struggle a bit at native resolution.

If you want to game, and you can't get the games for mac, you'll need a windows copy. You can just run windows on the mac with bootcamp. It comes free with your mac, you'll need to restart to acces windows, or mac os x (when windows has booted).

You could use virtualization software, but it wont be able to take full advantage of your mac. Altough there has been progression, it still isn't good enough for hardcore gaming.

(I also heard about the touch screen, but it will probably take a while before it's on the market). It was a patent BTW. The first patent for the iPhone appeared a few years before the iPhone really came.
