iMac Fan Issues

Just got my replacement "20 iMac C2D today and the fans sound really off. I recorded a short clip. It is on for the first bit then I put it to sleep, then I started it up again.

Have a listen.

My main concern is the "moo" noise at the end. Sounds just like my MacBook did.

Also I matched the volume at about 50% with iTunes on full so if you could tell me if it is louder or quieter than yours that would be great.

Anyways..

I have dealt with 4 or 5 new intel imacs.. both core duos and core 2 duos.

Some of them are a bit louder than the other ones, but i concider yours to sound like a typical imac, even thoug your fans seems quite loudy.
The fans speed up when you push the button, and thats the "mooo"-sound. Perfectly normal!

As long as your fans doesn't make ticking fanblade scraping noises (like a kitchen clock) or blow like a hairdryer, you don't have to worrie.

The fan-speed can reduce a bit if you reset SMC (unplug everything mouse , ipod , powercord etc. from your imac, and plug it back in after 15 seconds. then press powerbutton)

You can also try zapping your PRAM..

I am aware there should be one "woosh" but I haven't heard the "moo" before. It is delayed about 2 seconds and sounds really odd in person. I have dealt with a few iMacs as well and never heard this.

I know it shouldn't be a big deal but after all the problems I had with the MacBook I was really hoping the iMac would be problem free.

You can also try zapping your PRAM..

PRAM has nothing to do with fans!!!!!

you are only hearing that when you are awaking it from sleep correct? all imac's make that noise. That's just the whole machine firing back up to work again. Mine does it....my friends does it....the apple store machines do it too. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like it moo's when u are just working on it only waking it

Correct but, for the last time, I am talking about the second noise. It's at the very end. Not quite a "moo" but very close. It sounds like a something is interfering with the fan. I definitely did not have this noise on the last one.

I think this is why the computer is louder than normal.

iMac ticking fan

Hello,
I've got a new, 3 week old, 24" intel 2.8GHz iMac. 2 gig with a ticking CPU fan. Seems to becoming more and more frequent. Getting angry. With smcfancontrol I have to set that fan to 3000 loud! rpms just to get the ticking to stop. Even then I can still kind of hear the ticking, just very fast. Loose axle? Are the people at the Mac store going to give me a song and dance if I take it to them. Cuz if they do I'll throw things, I don't want to throw things.
Please, is there a fix. Or do I have to make the call and put my boots on.

woke up this morning and noticed a tiny ticking/humming noise coming from the fans as well. i have the same iMac model as you except my fan controls are set to their default levels. its low but it is still noticeable if it is quiet in my room. not to worried about it since i have applecare but it is a bit annoying to hear.
