I started noticing this annoying humming sound from 20inch alum iMac a few days ago. My fans are running at:
CPU :1199
HD:1199
OD: 998

I was honestly convinced that my iMac was faulty. I was all ready to pack up and take it to the apple store.
Then I got a few people to listen to it...they said that "Thats how a Normal Computer sounds"
I still didnt believe it. So i went to the craptacular desktop in my house and listened to it. And it was making the same noise.

So I just made this thread for people in the same position as me, that the sound is NORMAL. The only reason you might seem to be noticing the sound more is because everything is built into the screen..and it's closer to your head. Unlike a desktop which lies underneath the desk..which you dont hear whirring away.

Hopefully this helps some people out :)

That ring tone is horrid. And, going against what I'm "supposed" to hear, I'm clearing 20khz no problem. Above that I can discern a difference - but it's likely a secondary effect I'm hearing.

Yeah I thought my iMac was making abnormal humming noise, but it turns out it's in normal operation. Sometimes our expectation is too high towards something that looks so perfect. That's all.

Comparing my iMac to my PC, the PC is way louder.

Mine is audible... but it's not exactly 'loud'

I think I have to take it with a grain of salt when I read people claiming their iMacs are "SILENT"

Anyway, I certainly going to take note of what the new Alu ones sound like next time I visit an Apple store, just to compare
