Hi guys. I bought one of the new-gen iMacs last month--my first Mac!

Anyway, here's what's up:

My computer will often start making a low-droning noise, and it sounds like a fan. I have iStat, and usually during this time it will say that my Optical Drive and CPU Fan are both running at around 4000rpm.

This happens when there is very little CPU usage too. It's happening right now, and I only have firefox running.

Is this normal? If not, what should I do?

Thanks!! :)

Hi u2dy.

Using iStat Nano (widget) and Print Screen (CMD+Shift+4 keys), please show us your iMac internal heat numbers and internal fan speeds. Need to see screen print pictures because of multiple fan speeds and multiple temp sensors.

For example (for my iMac 21.5" system):

If wondering, FREE iStats Nano available at: http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatnano/

thanks.

Sorry that my reply took a while..I had to wait until my mac's fan started back up again!

Here's a screen shot of my iStat.

Thanks for any help! This makes me nervous.

Out of curiosity, what is the temperature of the room the iMac is in? Room temperature can affect how hot the iMac's internals are.

What is the exact year and model and screen size of your Mac as well?

re: MBP, Mac Air, iMac ? if iMac, is it a 21.5" or 27" model?

These details are critical as well....

.

It's the newest generation 21' iMac. I bought it in August.

The room that the computer is in DOES run a little warmer than the rest of my home. But, still, I'm sure that it's rarely warmer than 75 degrees.

bump.

Is this an issue that I should just contact Apple about?

Those temps look okay to me. All are close to 30 C which is really good. I don't see a reason fir the CPU fan to be running near 4000 RPM. The optical drive fan seems to be running too fast for it's temp as well. You may want to contact Apple about this. Maybe a temp sensor is malfunctioning or something.
