My parents have a 17" 1.8 powerpc iMac. About 1/2 of the time, when they are using it, the fans are running full force and it sounds like a jet engine is taking off in the other room. Is this a common problem with iMacs because of their compact design or is there some way I can fix this?

Logic board failure. My parents have the same model, and it happened to them. Very expensive repair if you are not under warrenty.

Happened to the person I traded with. Once I gave him my iMac G5, the logic board failed. These machines act very funky and according to him, it cost about 600 dollars for them to repair the logic board.

The logic board failed in it 1 time already. It got replaced and it is still under warranty. So how do I know its the logic board?

So far, the logic board and dvd-drive went out...thank god for apple care.

Burning iMac

Unlucky... however... one day I came home and thought something was burning in the oven! Turns out, part of my computer started to burn. Mac was happy to replace it, considering i should have sewed them if my house burned down!

Wow, that would be an interesting law suit. You would have a hell of a time finding out what started the fire though (no one would believe its your computer) They ought to make an episode of "Justice" on that!

I think that that was a seperate issue - there was a faulty batch of capacitors made around that time and it affected many makers. Apple repair them for free. Now, this may be the same issue, but I'd check Apple's list of recalls and warranty extension programs to see if you can get it sorted for free.

Having said all that, those do get hot in normal usage - open it up (you can with those models - there should be a howto on apple.com), and see if there's loads of dust or something stopping the fans working efficiently.
