Hello, I have an iMac 10.6.4. I have been trying with no success to hook up (via firewire) to the Alesis Multimix 8. I also have the Tascam 1804. I downloaded the correct drivers for each source. Followed all directions such as turning units off and restarting. For some reason, it seems the iMac does not see either of the units. I have been alternating the units several times, removing and re-installing the drivers. Yet, I cannot see the either unit in hardware overview, nor in Logic Express. I am using a new firewire 9 pin to 6 pin cable. When I click on the icon for the Alesis unit, I get a message saying "Alesis Firwire, no devices found, connect devices" The Alesis does not show in Logic Express either. As far as the Tascam is concerned, their message states, FW1804 not available. It seems the iMac just does not recognize any of these units. Can anyone shed light on this for me please, I would hate to run out an buy another interface!

Have you contacted Alesis to determine if it is supported to use a Firewire 800 to 400 cable with their device and if it's been tested to operate properly?
Also, pull down under the apple menu to "about this mac".
Go to "more info".
Then go to "firewire".
Does it report any devices attached?

Yes I have contacted Alesis, and they have not responded. When go to About This Mac, and click Firewire, it does not recognize the units at all. It does show
Firewire Bus, Maximum speed: up to 800 mb/sec.

It almost sounds as if you have potentially a bad Alesis unit (one of their co-founders died over the weekend so for all I know they have some kind of period of mourning where your requests aren't being answered) or the unit is a FW400 only device despite having a conversion cable that should work.
Have you searched on gearslutz.com to see if anyone else has reported this?

The Alesis works well with my laptop, so the unit is fine. I'm thinking maybe the firewire cable itself. The driver seems good, I DL'd the driver from Alesis for my system. The system preferences do not see the unit. Maybe the 800 firewire is not compatable, but why would they have the driver for the most recent iMac?
