My dear sweet wife surprised me with an iMac for Christmas not knowing that they would probably be updated tomorrow.
I was going to wait to get one with tax return money and after any possible update in late Feb.
If they are updated she's going to be royally ticked off. This happened last time I got an iMac in August of 2003.
This buying burn indecently led me to MacRumors and the buyers guide. I didn't know better then. I do know, but unfortunately she did not.
What will I be able to do in regards to exchanging for the upgraded model? Anything? My new iMac was purchased from the Apple Store in SF second week of Dec.
It's a 2.66 with 750 GB and 4GB of RAM. A very, very sweet machine. BUT....
Anybody have first hand experience? Know what I can do?

Thanks

If you haven't opened it, you should be able to return for full credit. Get busy!

Return and Refund Policy

Items purchased at the Apple Online Store between October 31, 2008 and December 24, 2008, may be returned through January 9, 2009. Please note that all other terms and conditions provided in the Apple Online Store Sales and Refunds Policy are still applicable with respect to such items purchased, including the assessment of a 10% restocking fee on any open box item. All purchases made after December 24, 2008 are subject to the standard Apple Online Store Sales and Refunds Policy, which requires returns to be made within 14 calendar days of the date of receipt.

Knowing my girlfriend, I personally wouldn't bother. They aren't due for a redesign for another 6-12 months anyway.

Regardless, you can't return it either way, it's hard drive and RAM are not the stock configuration. Apple doesn't do returns on BTO orders.

Did not know about the BTO orders. Good to know.
I will be totally, completely, without a doubt fine either way. Super happy. Super content.
I am coming from a 1 GHZ G4 17" iMac (swing arm model). It doesn't even have USB 2!
So my new iMac is light-years ahead of my old one. I am sure I will get close to 6 years out of this one too.

Thanks for your replies.

my wife bought me an early birthday present (30gb ipod) about 1 month prior to the Classic release...which was only 10-15 days after my actual birthday.

mine was going sour and the thought was great, but i kept kicking myself.
oh well.

like a catch-22, it is great but kinda sucks.

My girlfriend isn't due for a redesign until next year.

call customer care, they take just about anything back

i returned an imac in may, then returned the same one in november, got a third in december which i didnt like the way it looked and they refunded all 2816 dollars worth

I never knew you couldn't return BTO ones.
I guess you should always give it a try first though.
If they don't let you, then just stick with it.
