iMac for HD Video Editing

Hi,

I am about to purchase the current 27" Quad-Core 2.8GHz iMac to be used for HD video editing (the video's are 2-6 minutes in length) Below are the specs, and I'm going to do 1 upgrade option. Is this a good system for HD video editing?

Also, should I upgrade the RAM or Processor speed? Being that Final Cut is 32-bit, I would assume I should upgrade the processor instead. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB

Your going to be pist off when they release more powerful iMacs within two months. Just saying. Take a look at the buyers guide for more info

As above, unless you are desperate for it I would hold off. The specs you have listed for the current i5 will probably be found in the low end refreshed iMac, maybe even better due to SandyBridge.

guys, can i ask a similar question in here rather than starting another thread?

Can the existing 21" imacs also edit HD content flawlessly? Going with the lowest spec model.

I'm waiting for the new models to be announced then shall hopefully be buying the 21" - wanted the 27" but the missus isn't keen. I'm only going to be a casual user so have no need for a mac pro. Hopefully by accepting it's a NO to the 27" i can barter my way up to a top spec 21" with the good lady indoors

The footage will be coming from a Canon HV20 connected via Firewire 400.

The footage will be coming from a Canon HV20 connected via Firewire 400. The only thing that I have been reading about that has me a little concerned is not being able to have two seperate hard drives, one for the os and one for final cut, to prevent bottlenecks. But the 7200rpm drive should be effecient then?

I was looking at the buyer's guide and it's hard to say exactly when it will be coming out, but it does seem like it will be soon. The system will be used for work purposes and we're ready to get going on the content that we will produce using this machine, but do you have any concrete information as to when the new iMac's will be coming out? If it's going to be March/April we will probably just wait, but if it's going to be June/July we will probably just go ahead and order a system now...

Well, my guess would be April. I pick April because the the 2008 iMac refresh was in April, the 2009 in March, the late 2009 in October, and the 2010 in July. It will most likely hit April/May.
