I need your opinions; since the 10.6.3 update my iMac has begun to freeze to a blank screen. I think this may be a sign of a dying logic board, however I question this as I don't have the freezing problem with 10.6.2. Picture of blank screen attached.

I seem to be getting the same problem.
Can anybody help? I'm starting to panic.

My iMac was running fine earlier but when I returned to it the screen was blank. It seemed to be running but I couldn't get anything on the screen. I forced a restart and there was still no display. I even tried booting from the Snow Leopard DVD but that didn't help.

Please help me! :(

im having the same if not a similiar issue, just got back from a trip to Denver and I had left my late 2009 27in i7 iMac OFF and unplugged from the wall, the same way I had left it when I went on my 2 week vacation and it worked fine after I got back from Europe but this time I get back, I plug in the computer back into the power outlet and press the power button...the fans start kicking up my external hdd gets power and I can hear the computer start up, so i wait....10min later the screen is still black, absolutely nothing....so i do a hard reboot but i removed all usb peripherals that were attached to the computer (hdd, usb stick, etc) and still nothing from the screen...called applecare they made me do some weird **** and still wouldn't work so now i have an apt at the apple store tomorrow....the screens are **** ***** **** or it could be a dying logic board i dunno...as long as my hdd can be saved im ok just cuz I have expensive software on there

After a few more restarts mine came back to life.
Anybody know what the problem could be? If it is a dying logic board, can this be fixed?

i only got mine 4 months ago, so it was a warrany fix, I have apple care as well

Mine has gone again. I think I may well have a dead graphics card. Does anybody know how much this will cost to repair (it's out of warranty)? And where is the best place to get it done? My iMac is about 2 years old :(

if its newer then 1year then its under warranty and will cost $0 :D

but if its happening for a number of users then i hope its not the OS that is doing it :(

please everybody - backup just incase!

That's what I was wondering. It's just come back on - i wonder how long it will last this time.
Unfortunately I don't have AppleCare (I know :(), any idea how much this will cost to repair?

oh no! im sorry to hear that!

if it was caused by an apple update (and they can confirm that) then hopefully they will cover that, if its natural (ha) then you might be looking at $500+, depending on what it is.

Thanks for the sympathy ;)
So what's the best thing to do? Take it to an Apple Store?
How are they able to confirm whether the update caused it?

first i would recommend running the hardware utility test from the OSX install disc, provided you can boot from it! that might indicate where the actual problem is - and might help indicate the price. then go from there.

there are logs kept EVERYWHERE on the computer - you would hope taht they check those firstly, you can check them yourself through "Console" (search in Spotlight) - that might give an indication to you of the problem, its hard to search though. worth a shot.

Update: I've wiped and reinstalled SL up to 10.6.2 .... so far no freezing problems. I guess it's a problem with the 6.3 & 6.4 updates after all.

I had weird problems with software screens freezing after update to 10.6.3. Things that worked 5 minutes before the update, no longer worked. After spending 1.5 hours with Applecare on the phone, the tech thought that some software got corrupted at the time I did the update. Just a coincidence that it happened just before installing the update.

I finally reloaded the OS from the original disk that came with the computer. Everything worked fine, so I got brave and decided to install the 10.6.3 update again. Everything is still working after the update.

iMac Freeze with black screen not response from ports

Since I've update to 10.6.4 the same issue. I do have a question, do anyone here have a iphone? I notice that yesterday I left it on all day without my iphone plugged in and it was fine all day. This morning I decided to backup my iphone and leave it charging too. I'm not sure when it happened but it was like a hour or so when I made breakfast and came back. My screen was black and nothing would response so I had to hold down the power button.
