Imac Freezing up alot

I recently downloaded a couple of apple programs of bit torrent. Every since that my imac as slowed down a whole lot and i get the spinning beach ball of doom. I think i may have gotten a virus and or spyware on my computer? Is there any good virus protection programs/ spyware programs for free?

Also i have tried deleting the program and clearing alot of space off my hard drive. (it freezes the most when i open up system preferences)
 
Thats where you made your problem, when you download bit torrents, download them onto an external drive, extract, and then defrag your external drive.

Really? I've never heard that before. Oops. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but you seem to know a bit about torrents, what torrent app do you recommend for os x?
 
I used Azureus on Linux (never on OSX yet) for some two years in a 24x7 fashion. After a couple of days (10 or more) It needs to be restarted. It somehow leaks memory, loads of it. Besides that is quite complete, works well, and has loads of features. Copy/paste torrents or magnet links works perfectly. > 700 GB porn confirm it :D

So.. what if you do not have an external HD? You'll have to accept your iMac is slower?
 
My iMac doesn't slow during Torrent downloading. I use Transmission.

create a .dmg using disk image, but the space isnt ample and we use bit torrents to download big file dont we?


and no, im the farthest from a bit torrent expert, i know this stuff because of my friend who is one :p
 
I started seeing the spinning beach ball recently, on hard disc access (ie application switching/force quitting did not work - I had to wait to perform these operations as well), and within 3 weeks the hard disc was totally dead. While it was on the way out it showed lots of errors when verified with disc utility, so I suggest trying this in case.
 
Also, do you have any magnets near by? I have seen an HD die in front of my own bloody eyes. a guy was using his macbook, and a kid went up and put two VERY strong magnets next to where they put the HD in the macbook. and within seconds, the HD started to make VERY loud tuck tuck tuck sounds and the dude quit safari, opened up itunes, and it took like 5 minutes to open, spinning beach ball, the OS was slow, and practically damaged, they had to uninstall mac os x, and reinstall it, the magnet pulled the information off of it
