Lately I've been having a problem where my imac is freezing to the point that i have to hold in the power button and restart it manually. When the computer freezes the only thing that works is the pointer when i move the mouse. I can't even CMD-option-esc to force close any apps running. The only thing i've noticed is that i'm usually watching youtube (safari and chrome) when this happens although that could be a coincidence. Any way I can diagnose to see what the problem could be? I'm running yosemite on a 2007 imac.

Got the original system install discs?
Probably on disc 2 is Apple Hardware Test. Run that in full diagnosis and see what is reported. Otherwise download AHT for you exact machine from the link, burn to a thumb drive and boot from that to mrun the tests.

I'd suggest testing the iMac with a new User Account to see if the issue occurs only when you are using your present one.
