iMac G4 as monitor for new Macbook?

I've had an iMac G4 (the dome) for the better part of 6 years. Maybe even 7. I've lost track.:eek:

Still works fine but was running a little slow so I decided to jump into a Macbook recently. Very happy with that so far. It is screaming fast in comparison.

We're keeping the iMac for my wife to use for basic internet surfing while I have the Macbook with me. They'll have to share a desk when they're both home though.:D

So I thought is it possible to use the old iMac monitor to mirror my Macbook while in clamshell mode? I think those are the correct terms...

Not the cleanest method by far...

Could you use the video input from an Elgato EyeTV and connect that to the output from the MacBook? The '250 Plus' and the 'EyeTV Hybrid' do this.

Ideally there'd be some kinda DVI input for the iMac, but this is the only way to do what you're after...

Not really...

The simple answer is no. The EyeTV options all have a slight delay.

Ok i had a feeling someone was going to say this but i'd hoped most people would have had more sense.

This will work, but won't work right. Basically he'll have to have his iMac on at the same time as the Macbook, have it or the EyeTV performing massive amounts of conversion and getting at best a clear lower resolution than either his macbook or iMac or at worst a blurry same resolutiuon.

This is NOT a VIABLE option and never will be.

Hahaha...didn't think anyone still remembered that. Thanks for the flashback, zelmo.

Well it feels like it's 6-7 years old. Guess I've had it 5 years then.

Your best bet would be to upgrade the old iMac to a Mini and buy a dual input LCD screen for it. Or just use the macbook on your lap :).
 
Thanks folks. I'll probably just put the compuers side-by-side with the Macbook on a stand and share the same keyboard and mouse. Just plug and unplug those as necessary.
 
Slightly OT but related - I wish the new iMacs had a Video in, it is the only reason I am not all over one as a desktop replacment for my G4 iMac. (The other option being to just get a nice screen mouse & keyboard for my MacBook).
