Hi every one, I am new to the forum. A good friend of mine has given me their
iMac G5 1.8GHz with 512mb ram.

Its on Mac OSX 10.3.9 (7W98)
Kernal Version Darwin 7.9.0

This is my first Mac and I am looking to upgrade it as it seems a bit slow and lots of new SW such as iTunes latest will not work on my OS.

I have ordered 2Gb of Ram to speed things up hopefully.

The next thing I want to do is update the OSX.

What is the latest version I can go up to? I see the latest OSX 10.6 now leopard requires and Intel processor and I take it that my iMac is not an Intel CPU?

Also out of interest is there a way to totally reset the OSX i have at the moment?

Thanks

for your help

.

I just gave my iMac G5 to my parents. I reformatted it with Tiger (10.4) and was amazed at how fast it was. I had been running Leopard (10.6) on it My iMac has 2GB RAM. I recommend you upgrade from 512.

Well if you have the system cd's then yes, you can do a clean install, that will erase everything though, so backup any data you need.
You can also do a clean install with leopard once you get it. that would technically be a total reset.

If you really want to speed up your mac, how about an SSD?. I put one inside my dads G5 20", possibly the same as yours, dont know. Its quicker than the 2.4Ghz latest mac mini my mum has :D, of course only when it comes to booting up, launching applications :p
