Hi, I bought a second hand iMac (G5 2.1Ghz, 20 inch, with iSight) earlier, there is an issue with the iMac, whenever I power up the iMac, apart from the usual Mac Startup Chime, there is a series of melodic beeps (not the standard beeps of bad memory). The melodic beeps sounded something from an old cell phone. During the entire process there is nothing on the screen, and by nothing I meant a black screen, the screen never lighted up.

Perplexed with the beeps, I called Apple technical support. They weren't 100% sure what could be the culprit, but they told me it is very likely to be the hard drive at fault.

Therefore I just took sometime to replace the hard drive. The originally installed drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax 250GB SATA Drive, I replaced it with a Western Digital 640GB Hard Drive.

After removing the original 250GB drive I tested it in another PC, as the 250GB drive is being powered, there it is, the melodic beeps are in fact originated from the hard drive!

I thought problem is solved, however my excitement is shortlived.

After installing the 640GB Hard Drive, I powered the iMac on, with my fingers crossed, there is the standard startup chime, which is normal. Of course, the melodic beeps are gone.

But the problem is the screen never turns on. I don't get the typical gray screen before loading into MacOS. Just a dead, black screen.

Here's my observation:

* The iMac powers up everytime I press the power button, so power does not seem to be an issue
* After powering up my optical mouse's (Optical Pro Mouse) red light lights up and stays lighted
* The cap lock button of the keyboard does light up for a split second. But when I try to press the cap lock key myself afterwards the cap lock light doesn't light up
* Tried resetting PRAM, by holding Command, Option, P and R Keys. The reset process is a success, held the 4 keys until I hear the second startup chime, but still, the display doesn't turn on
* When I first power up apart from the startup chime there isn't much noises I can hear, however after leaving it on for around 5 minutes suddenly the fan goes to full throttle.

Could it be something that I missed during the Hard Drive replacement process? Or the logic board is defective in the first place?

Is there anything else I can try to pinpoint the problem?

This is a long message so thanks for reading. Thanks!
