Hello all!
I've been trying to figure out this problem myself and have given up.
I got an iMac G5 A1058 from a relative. It's the 2 GHz model with the dual-layer optical drive.
When I got it, on bootup, it displayed a blank light blue screen. If you waited a few minutes, a cursor would appear, but nothing else. I left it overnight just to make sure.
So I bought a Tiger 10.4.6 boot DVD, installed that, and... it worked! Installed, booted up, and worked fine. So I shut it down and went to bed.
Next day, I boot it up. While it is showing the white screen with the Apple logo, I hear "vrrrRRRR-SCREEEEECH", the Apple logo stops spinning, and then the iMac shuts down.
I immediately figure out it is the hard drive as the optical drive can't create that specific horrible sound of metal on metal, and swap its hard drive for a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5" + 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter, after formatting it to Apple Partition Table & Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). I name it "Tiger", put it in, put in my Tiger DVD, and install Tiger.
It installs, I reboot, and...
Fail.
After booting up, it displays a light blue screen for a split second and then shows a gray screen.
Google says to try Safe Mode, so I do so. It works fine in Safe Mode.
I open Software Update, update to 10.4.11, reboot, and this time, instead of a gray screen, I get a blank light blue screen. Again, it still works in Safe Mode.
Any ideas on what to do? I am currently waiting on a Leopard DVD to see if that works, as during the Tiger install process it showed that it had Leopard 10.5.8 installed.
