iMac G5 Dead

My iMac G5 seems to be suffering from some severe problems.

My family woke up to the fans being on full bore, since then the iMac has been unusable. When I got to it and started it up (all peripherals unplugged) the screen did not come on at all, pretty much no response but the sleep light came on.

Next, I tried to boot from the Mac OS X install CD, the screen went to a dark purple (screen was on, but blackish) fans came on and thats where it got to. I took the CD out and started a third time, it opened up fine, but when I went to move a file the computer locked up.

My sister reports that she also managed to start it up fine only to get coloured bars on the screen.
Two more restarts resulted in the screen getting to the part where it goes all blue and won't move further.

I have since been able to boot from the OS X CD and am running Disk utilities repair disk, and permissions, I intend to run the Hardware test next.

This iMac has had problems before, but had motherboard replaced.

Going in to Apple store tomorow, any other suggestions?

Since then it has started fine, able to run programs copy files (touchwood) justs seems slower, Finder also immediately crashed. Warranty is running out in next few days...

Which model do you have? I had the 1.6GhZ model until I got my shiny new MBP. Long story short, it's still in service, but it's on motherboard #3 and power supply #2 (apparently the replacement motherboard that they sent was defective) and repair shop #2 also had also to replace the fan assembly. The Apple guy I spoke to said this wasn't an isolated incident.

Good luck to you. Tell us how the diagnostics go. In case you haven't already, remember to unplug all your peripherals.

Sounds to me that this is the faulty capacitor problem some examples of that model suffered from. Take the back off the iMac and look to see if any of the capacitors are bulging or leaking. If they are, Apple will need to swap out the midplane. Check out the iMac G5 reader reports section on MacInTouch for detsils
