I had a question about registering both computers and Applecare. My sister will be starting college in the fall, and I just bought her a rev.A 17" 1.8 SD iMac. She wont be getting it until the middle of June when she graduates. In the meantime, I'll be upgrading some things (RAM, Tiger) myself.

My concern is that if I initially register the computer to her on the first boot, she'll get some sort of "Welcome to Apple" email, and that would sort of ruin the surprise.

My plan is to register it to myself, do all the upgrades. Then, on the day I go up to give it to her, I'll delete my account and re-register it in her name. I'd also enroll in Applecare then as well, just so I don't have to deal with paperwork transferring it.

So basically, am I better off registering it to myself and transferring it, or just registering it to her from the start? I'm just a bit paranoid that if I register it to her now, she'll find out about it a month before she actually gets it.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

P.S. Sadly, I spent the money I was saving to switch myself to buy her the iMac. Now she'll be switching before I do!

How about registering it to her, but use your email address. Or use an alias that you can map to yourself before you give it to her, and then remap to her afterwards?

Nice gift!

The basic registration screens that you get from a brand new Mac can be skipped and done at a later time. Also I'm pretty sure if you are installing Tiger yourself, you can setup up the installer to do a fresh installation (Factory settings) and thus after you install Tiger, it will begin with the whole registration setup routine. Therefore your Sister can register the computer and have Tiger and whatever upgrades all ready to go.
Yeah, great gift!

Thanks for the quick replies!

I didn't know that you could skip the registration and do it later. Blodwyn, thanks for the alias idea, I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Thanks for solving that for me.

Tim, I hope that everything will work as planned. Your sister is a very lucky young lady. She should be very appreciative of the gift. How soon do you think that you will be able to switch?

Unfortunately, not soon enough. Hopefully by the end of the summer I'll be able to pick something up with my faculty discount. If I'm lucky they'll do another Cram and Jam special, and I can grab an iPod too.
