I popped in a music CD I bought today, and the Mac just spat it right back out (after ten seconds of deliberating).

The drive didn't spin up, but listening closely I can hear it beeping very quietly. Any idea what's going on with this?

Just tried a DVD too, it does exactly the same.

Cheers.

does you apple hardware test cd work ? cos it sounds as if you dvd cd drive is up the swanny

maybe a call to apple might fix it :)

Apple are sodding useless, the drive seemed bonked as it wasn't writing to DVDs, now it plain doesn't work. They only offered to 'let' me take it into a repair centre, an hour at the least for me and I don't own a car (I live in Northampton, the repair centre is in Leighton Buzzard).

I'm meant to be selling this soon too, what the heck. :(

tell em your too busy to take it in to a repair place and get them to pick it up , will be away for about week to 2

I've tried all that dude, they won't budge. They won't even send a replacement drive to me, utterly awful customer service and general help from Apple, possibly the worst company I've had to deal with in terms of helping me with a faulty machine.

No idea what to do now. Where can I get a replacement drive pronto? I'll send Apple the bill, the utter shitehawks.

you must be going about it the wrong way - phone em , tell em , tell em again and then ask to speak to a supervisor - then tell em again

just keep your cool -

IMO Apple centers are ok for laptop repairs but carting a desktop computer is just plain hassle

I have, four different times, then the guy turned around and said he can't do anything, just like the woman I spoke to earlier did. The only option was to purchase AppleCare (£150?! No chance, it is/was under warranty).

Is it still in warranty?
I contacted them before it ran out (late August), and apparently that was fine to ensure that it could get sorted. But only in a repair centre.

An Apple Store (Regent St) in London. Quite far away for me.

Decide what it is you want them to do and tell them firmly and politely. Make sure you speak to the most senior person you can. It might also be useful to ask for some advice from your local trading standards people beforehand. good luck.

Yeah, I've done that a few times now. :(

I'll get on the phone to the Citizens Advice Bureau or get in touch with Trading Standards, it's pretty absurd.

bad luck really , i seem to have no problems with apple - but then i have spent a small fortune over the years with them - i'm hoping that does not reflect the level of servce people get with them ?

BTW is this your 1st Mac?

My first one was an iMac G4 a few years ago, sold that, went to the PC route, then decided to go the full hog with a Mac, picked up a second hand Dual Core 2Ghz PowerMac with 20" ACD from this very forum for £1k, sold that off because I needed to pay rent and wanted a G5. Went for the G5 and have just been having problems with the DVD drive, and the system generally feeling a bit slow. Going down the PC laptop route next time, so much less hassle when it's not dealing exclusively with one company.

Doesn't help when Safari just crashes at least once every day.

Any idea where to buy a replacement drive? Will any slot-loading drive do? Is it easy to fit inside a G5?

My iMac G5 Rev. A developed the same fault on Saturday except just with DVD blank discs and discs previously burned on this computer. The discs worked fine in a Mini and a Power Mac G4.

Got on the phone to Apple (I have AppleCare); ran through a few tests, most of which I'd already tried, with the service guy (who was Indian and very nice) and he agreed that the optical drive needed replacing.

When I explained that the nearest AASP was 100 miles away he arranged to have it shipped to me as a user serviceable part.

It is now winging it's way to me and should be here by Wednesday according to tracking. Would have been quicker if it hadn't happened on the weekend.

I had just as good an experience when the hard drive needed replacing. It arrived exactly 24 hours after my phone call.

So no complaints here about Apple service.

You paid for the extortionate Applecare, a service which should be offered to all customers within the one year warranty. There's no way I'm paying £212 to Apple, and the only drive I found online somewhere else is £150.

Don't forget that you have rights as a consumer and no matter what Apple say they are still bound by UK law if they're opperating in the UK... Tell them you know your rights. For a small fee a soliciter would right you a letter 'reminding' Apple.

:)

I've had trouble too :( It really hurts my oppinion of Apple which is a pitty because when there products work they're sooooo cool! I've had two Mac's and both have had problems! Sorted now but it was a major fight.

if you can get a case id, then try phoning up sales (as it's freephone number) and ask to be put through to customer relations, the might be more helpful.

Today I called up again, expecting the same words back - but! It's been sorted. :D Basically, I had to give them credit card details (had to get my father's since I don't have £230  in my account for them to 'reserve' in case I don't send the faulty one back).

Never again am I going for something as unportable as an iMac or PowerMac, Mac Mini or MacBook in the future. Or whatever they decide to announce today!
