Hi - I have just purchased a G5 with 1.5gb Ram and 160GB Disk for a massive uk £25 and purchased Macos Leopard 10.5.8 for another £20 - so all in all a cheap deal to enter the Mac world.I would like to use it for music and like the look of garage band - I have searched all over forums/web sites and come across all kinds of things that stand in the way.So the first question is Where do I get the software from , 2 Where or which browser actually works without safari saying cant open the site. 3. How far can I go with hardware - eg increase ram to ? , hard disc size too ?.

I hope too many people dont ask the same newbie questions.

The biggest problem you're going to have is that the computer is no less than 15 years old, and everything on it, including software, is old and incompatible with any recent apps. I wouldn't spend any more money on this computer simply because it's so old and could stop working at any point. There's a PowerPC Mac forum here, which will likely be more useful to you than the general iMac forum: https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/powerpc-macs.145/

This is an older system and really not an ideal way to enter into the Mac world. The iMac G5 is a hobbyist/collector machine at best and you could be on borrowed time as some of the iMac G5 systems have faulty capacitors. You can find model Information at www.everymac.com and you can find plenty of software at https://www.macintoshrepository.org

Your best bet for a browser will be tenfourfox and although still working, that too has now had its development halted. It's based on Firefox and is quite compatible with most sites but is a tad slow these days. For your operating system I would if possible downgrade to 10.4. It will feel much snappier.

For GarageBand, you’ll need to find a copy of iLife on DVD. Bonus, iLife will also include iPhoto and iDVD.
