I just placed my order for the new iMac G5 (yay!) and was about to place my 2GB RAM order to go with it, when I noticed this warning on Apple's site:

============================================

Note: DDR2-SDRAM is closely correlated with your computer's processor. You should purchase PC2-4200 DDR2-SDRAM for iMac. If you don't purchase memory directly from Apple, be sure to check with the third-party manufacturer to verify compatibility before purchase.

============================================

There's a great deal on a 2GB chip at welovemacs.com, but the manufacturer is TwinMOS, and TwinMOS says nothing about Apple compatibility on their site.

I just don't know enough about DDR2 RAM. Should I take welovemacs' word for it that it is compatible? How could they be sure since nobody even has this computer yet? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks!

It't not just the iMac, many Apple computers can be picky with respect to RAM. I had to return Crucial memory because it caused kernal panics in my powerbook (and Crucial is highly regarded as being very good for Macs).

My advice for buying RAM is this (regardless of what computer it is for): if the company does not offer exchange / money back for RAM that does not work in your computer, buy elsewhere.

Yay!

How much US$/CDN$ is a great deal?

I'm thinking of settling for a 1Gb RAM upgrade, since 2Gb extra is lot's more expensive and I don't think I'll need that much basically.

We Love Macs (Memory X) have been in business a long time and are a reputable dealer.

The RAM they are offering meets the basic specification that Apple has published, but realize that NO memory dealer has yet received an iMac G5 1.9 or 2.1 for compatibility testing, so it's not possible (yet) to offer tested RAM for this machine. This should sort itself out in the next few weeks as machines start delivering. The best you can hope for today is that the spec matches on paper, and the seller offers a 100%-including-shipping money back guarantee if it doesn't work.

Our suppliers will be giving us the model/pricing information on 2 Gb DDR-2 RAM on Monday.

Thanks

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered it because I was afraid the price would jump like it did at OWC - their price went up by about $60 in a matter of hours :eek: !!!
