I have had an iMac G5 Rev B for over a year now, have applied for Apple Care but haven't heard back from Apple yet.

It has had its logic board replaced twice so far and has been in to Apple 3 times.

Now the optical drive is giving me problems, it is spitting discs out so that they fall out, damaging my discs. Also it seems to struggle to read discs. It couldnt not read my UT2004, which my iBook can, but after trying again it reads it fine. My sister says she has had also had problems with some of her music CDs.

Is the optical drive in my iMac easy to replace? Or will the whole iMac (fingers crossed) need to be replaced?

well mine does that as well but it seems to only be with data discs...(spitting out) (i also find it funny)

bring it in see what they say...or call...

This was quite a common problem in the original G5 iMacs. It apparently has something to do with the mechanism that should grab the disc before it falls getting corrupt data from the OS but I'm not sure of a certain fix. You could start by resetting your SMU but I'm not sure how successful it'll be.

Replacing your optical drive isn't terribly difficult but I think it's overkill. I'd talk to Apple about this problem first. :)

Reset SMU, still spitting them out. I guess I'll give Apple a call tomorrow.

I had to replace my optical drive in my imac.

If there is something wrong with it, apple will give you two options. Either you can do it yourself, or Apple will do it for you. The latter is big hassel and will take a while. My advice is - definatly do it yourself. Its so easy and takes less than 5 minutes.

All you have to do is take the screws off the back of the computer then unscrew the optical drive and slam the new one in. They ship straight forward instructures with the new optical drive, and the necessary tools. Even my dad could do it.

Oh, and I requested a new drive and it arrived the very next morning!
