imac g5 upgrade from 10.3.9

im trying to find a way to upgrade my OS from 10.3.9 to 10.4.9 or higher.

im running a 1.8 GHz with 256MB DDR SDRAM

every time i try to download a new OS i keep getting messages that end up telling me the software "cannot be installed on this computer".


is there any way to get a newer operating system on my machine?

You can't download a 10.4.9 or similar 10.4.x update to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.3.x to Mac OS X 10.4.x, you need to buy every 10.x release. Therefore you have to get your hands on a Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD via eBay or similar means.

You will have to get Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard disc (a normal version, not a machine specific, like one that belongs to another Mac). Because you have a G5, I recommend you get Leopard (OS 10.5.x) and then you can update to 10.5.8 (the latest for G5 Macs). I wouldn't recommend Tiger (OS 10.4.x) anymore or a G5, as Apple is dropping support quickly for it. Leopard can be harder to find nowadays.

I would recommend buying OS X from ebay or Amazon.com, that way it should work, and won't have any problems with downloade versions. I also don't think will be too happy about people downloading their OS.

OS X Upgrade

If you are referring to a torrent type of a download, that may speak for itself why you are having difficulties. You are running a G5 with 256 MD of RAM, first I would suggest upgrading you memory. You may run into an issue or two with Leopard. Leopard has many document issues, by documented I mean posts in threads, with some GUI problems. The most common being the dock runs choppy. Also, you may find it seems to be running a little sluggish or hesitant. The previous post being correct with support may becoming obsolete for Tiger, I believe you may enjoy the Mac experience with less difficulties going that route. After all it's about the fun with Mac, right? With that being said, "search" for Tiger 10.4.1 and allow Software Update" to upgrade you to the 10.4.8 or whatever it may be.

You don't say exactly which model you have, but I believe that all 1.8 GHz iMac G5 machine can be upgraded to 2 GB RAM, and this is the first thing you should do if you plan on keeping the machine.

You also want to get a copy of OS/X 10.5 as Apple has been dropping support for all earlier versions; e.g., iTunes 10 won't run on 10.4 and the new iPods need iTunes 10.
