i am looking for some perspective from people who have owned both of these computers.
i am considering selling my 2.1ghz imac g5 and purchasing a 15" mbp.
i would like to wait until merom comes out, but as far as comparing the g5 and the yonah processor in the mbp, how do they stack up?
my ideal set up would be to have the mbp and an external monitor.
i use Aperture alot and final cut here and there with projects for school.
would this set up be faster? better? than my current 20" imac g5?
basically what are the pros to the g5 imac and the pros to the macbook pro

thanks for your input

MBP:

- I think it will be faster, waaay faster for Universal Pro Apps like Aperture
- Better, newer graphics
- Ability to use an external screen all the way up to the 30" ACD.
- New and more likely to be supported for longer technology
- Portable
- Will run the full Final Cut Studio and Shake and runs them very well

The MBP is a fantastic machine, but I suppose it'll depend on screen size more than anything else.

Yes, you can buy an external display, but that obviously comes with extra overheads, whilst the iMac's 20" is display is just there!

Personally, I wouldn't trade my laptop in for a desktop as I adore the flexibilty of bringing the thing whereever I go, and it's more than fast enough for my needs!

I recently sold my Power Mac dual G5 1.8 GHz so I could get a MacBook Pro. My 15" MBP 2.0 GHz, 128 MB video, 2 GB RAM is faster than the machine it replaced for most tasks. So I'd say they compare very very very well.

The MacBook Pro should be a good deal faster than your 2.1GHz iMac G5. The MBP has a faster cpu, faster gpu, gives you mobility, will last longer (Intel being the way of the Mac's future and all), etc.... :)

thanks alot guys
it seems as though i will purchase the macbook pro whenever it gets the merom processor. probably an apple cinema display as well, however i will try to wait until i come across either a good used one or an update from apple. the dell equivalents seem pretty tempting as far as monitors go.

by the way, anyone interested in a 2.1ghz 1.5gb iMac g5 with isight? :)

I would say "Post in the MarketPlace", but you need 100 posts and you are far from it. You could try eBay, not sure how much you could get there.

True, you could try to sell your iMac G5 on eBay bep207. :)

make more posts! :)

But you generally get better prices off eBay, because as you may have noticed, the people here are... better informed
