Tried pulling my iMac G5 (als) out of storage to see if I could get it running (probably hasn’t been turned on in 5 years, but was working well back then).

It powers-on (fans, optical drive, and HDD all seem normal), but it does NOT chime and immediately emits a loud, constant static from the internal speaker. (Putting something in the headphone port doesn’t make a difference.) Power light remains steady-lit, and screen remains off.

I’ve tried resetting the SMU (button on the logic board): computer responds, but starts-up the same. Logic board LEDs 1 and 2 light as expected, but #3 (video) is off.

Any ideas? I can’t seem to find info on the loud static. Many thanks!

What iMac is it? The first series (those with the back cover) had problems with capacitors. First on the logicboard it self and some in the PSU.

ALS model (pre iSight) so I believe my machine would fall into that category indeed. But would a bad capacitor cause loud static out both speakers?
