Hi guys well im close to purchasing an imac with the 2.93ghz processer, I study graphic design and use alot of indesign/photoshop and illustrator. I also hope to maybe look into 3d programs in the future, programs like Maya and cinema4d.. I wont really be using those intensivley. This brings me to the graphics card.. i realize that the new adobe cs4 suite of applications use your gpu in some form or another, i also heard that Snow lepoard will use your gpu. Will this become the future now with programs do you think? will they all use your gpu? Will the gt120 be futureproof for this. I also might do some light gaming.. Maybe some cod4 or fps like this. Does anyone have any benchmark scores or tests for this paticular card or the computer as a whole would be great..

Thank you for your help

Regards

For the tasks you will be doing the GT120 sounds fine, however if you are worried about it, you can always BTO an iMac with the Radeon 4850 which is a better card.

This thread has some preliminary benchmarks of the iMac in the various configurations.

Snow Leopard will allow the GPU to be used for certain regular processing functions such as encoding, etc, but the GT120 should prove fine for that. It all depends on the level of whatever you're doing and if you think you will need more power in the future.

I would beg to differ with 11800506. There are large reports of the 4850 card freezing up right here on this forum. You would be gambling. I would recomend the GT130. You will want 512mb to a gig for MAYA, CAD etc. This will significantly outperform the gt120. I bought my 3.06 gt130 computer for the exact same things as you plus running final cut. No regrets.

Uhm, i think the gt130 would be overkill.. i only want to do a bit of light gaming really, the gt120 can handle that cant it?

Also, is the processer in this thing good? the 2.93ghz.. Will it handle alot of applications open at once.. ie. Photoshop,Indesign,Illustrator, itunes,Firefox window.. And other applications open. Will it struggle with some small 3d rendering or will it handle it fine?

It's only -0,13 ghz less from the high end iMac with the 3.06 cpu ... you will notice NO difference at all.

Im just saying in general.. in terms of processers is a 2.93ghz core 2 duo good? or would a quad core machine be more benficial..

I reccomended the GT 130 based on your initial post citing MAYA and CINEMA4D. If you've chosen to abandon your 3D / cinema aspirations and only want to do "light gaming" a gt120 would be fine. The base model would probably suffice too. I try to think about what would suffice in two years though. We can't upgrade our imacs much :)

It's the second best mobile non quad-core processor. It's a killer. You don't need Mac Pro so there's no other quad-core Macs available.
