iMac Hard Drive fan running 5600rpm after replace

Hi all,

I just had an Apple Certified Service Center Plus fix my computer and replace my hard drive while it was open. Everything works, but the HDD fan constantly runs at 5600 RPM. I haven't tried clearing pram and everything yet, but will that fix it? Did the repair place kill the temp sensor for the hard drive?

Oh yea, its a Late 2006 model. White 17"

HDD Fan Control based on temperature from SMART

Hi, sorry to bring up a old thread, but for anyone having issues with a overactive fan due to the HDD temp sensor not working, I have created a program that will let you set a fan speed to HDD S.M.A.R.T temperature relationship.

I made this as I was having the same issue having upgraded my HDD to a model that doesn't provide the correct temperature using the sensor cable.

I started using smcFanControl with sleepwatcher but didn't like the manual setup and the fact I was limiting the fan speed no matter the HDD temperature. now thats not a problem.

Trying clearing the SMC first, then PRAM.

I'm not sure if the earlier Intel iMacs have a temperature sensor, because I upgraded the stock 250GB Maxtor drive in my old 20" 2.0GHz iMac with a 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black and had no issues with the fan spinning at max speed.

The pre late 2009 iMacs had a separate temperature sensor, as of late 2009 they started using a sensor built into the drives.

Since then you have had to match the manufacturer of your drive to the one already in your iMac (different cables) and if not matching do something else to stop the fans running at full speed.
I.e. short the sensor cable (fan always run at minimum speed),
use smcFanControl to limit fan speed to a set speed all the time,
or now, use HDDFanControl to set fan speed/SMART temp sensor relationship.
