iMac Hard Drive - Keeps Running

I have an 20" iMac running OS X 10.5 which I purchased in April 2008 and I'm wondering if I'm going to face an early failure of my hard drive as the read/write heads seem to be constantly active (I keep hearing the chatter of the heads). Has anyone else encountered this problem? TIA
