iMac has really started slowing down.. Apps, and everything else

Hi,
My iMac has started to run slow, when I first turn it on, and open up, say, google chrome, it takes over 30 seconds to open up, it just bounces in the dock for ages... Even the Trash, takes about 10 seconds to open up after i've clicked it...

The folders on my desktop, (4), the HD, and just four folders that are aliases to my sample library's. I cant see them when the iMac first turns on, takes quite a number of seconds before they pop up and appear..

I doesn't take too long to boot up the iMac itself, but anything I open/apps, have started taking a little while to open.

It's not too bad once the mac has been on for about 10 mins, but when I first open up an internet page, it just loads and loads before i can start using it... that's after ive waited 30+seconds for the internet app to open itself.. same with Safari, but i use Chrome, mainly. and i want to stick with Chrome.

Any one have any ideas? Maybe the internal hardrive is dying? I should maybe finally get a nice SSD for my iMac...

It's a fairly new and hi-spec iMac, so it should run nice and fast, no?

Most likely HD on its way out. We see it a lot. For premium machines they don't half like sticking cheap WD/Toshiba/HGST drives in them.

Try booting in single user mode and running fsck.

It could be the hard drive but from your description it could also be something running in the background taking up CPU cycles. You don't have to boot to single user mode to test the hard drive, just boot to your recovery partition (Command + R) and run Disk Utility First Aid from utilities. You could also try starting up in Safe boot mode (hold down shift key when booting) and see if that makes a difference. The hard drives installed in the 2013 iMacs were generally made by Seagate which aren't the most reliable.

Ah, really annoying. I have been thinking about getting a nice new SSd for my iMac, I've heard that's what will make the imac run faster, load things faster, etc, right?

I dont have anything running in the background, to my knowledge, It's happening when i first laod it up.. and,l i have nothing selected to launch on start up
