Hi all,

The internal 500GB HDD on my 1st Gen Aluminum 2.4GHz iMac has died, and I am going to replace it with a 1TB unit. My question is quite simple: which drive do you guys recommend?

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I recently replaced a drive in my PowerMac G5 with a Western Digital (1 TB) and have had no issues with it. It actually seems less noisy than the old drive. Hope this helps.

Also, could anyone post any tips and stuff when replacing the drive to prevent getting dust under the screen and stuff like that?
thanks

Would it happen to be this one?

It's the drive I'm currently leaning towards buying. How reliable are WDs supposed to be?

I recently installed the 1 TB Caviar black in my iMac. Performance has improved significantly but it has increased noise levels slightly.

Can you just write a short piece on your experience replacing it please? Was it easy to take it apart? Did you get any dust under the screen after putting it back together, how long did it take.. ect.

Has the noise increased to the point of being a nuisance? I love how quiet my iMac is.

All I did was study the instructions in the above thread - obtain torx T6 and T8 screwdrivers and canned air.

You can hear the hard drive humming if you put your ear right up to the screen and when it is seeking. I was about to get the Samsung F1 Spinpoint which I understand is very quiet but decided for the increased performance, with no regrets.

Sounds to me like a fair trade off then. Thanks for the input.

Does anyone know anything about Western Digital's reliability record?
