Hey, I am new here with a pre-purchase question. I want to get a computer for my room that is small and won't heat up the room as I found out that heat generated by the system become a major issue when I tried to put my PC in the room. Does the iMac generate lots of heat or will I be able to leave it on 24/7 without it heating up my room?

Under idle or normal load my iMac's CPU (Alu, 2GHz) gets up to 48° C, so I wouldn't worry heating up the room, except you plan to let it crunch numbers all day and have no means of bringing fresh air into the room.

You can also put it to sleep, which doesn't generate any heat noticeable by you (the RAM has to be powered , nothing more).

I sometimes leave downloads up to run overnight, would that cause the system to heat up?

Downloading does not hit the CPU cycles, so such activity should keep the machine pretty un-stressed. Now if you were going to leave it encoding video overnight, then it probably would heat things up. But I would think with just downloading, you would be fine.
