iMac i5 scratching discs?

I've noticed that every time I eject a disc, I see some scratches. I put in the Star Trek Digital Copy disc into my iMac disc drive and when it ejected, I found a lot of scratches on it. My Sims 3 and Spore discs also have similar type of scratches.

Is anyone having this problem or am I taking out the disc wrong causing the scratches? This is my first iMac and I'm a bit sad about this as I do not want to lug this computer back to the store to get a replacement...

And if I return it, do I have to bring it back to the same store or can I go to one that is closer to me?

You're not the only one.

I noticed upon taking out a dvd from my i7 a load of surface scratches. I think it's from the furry bits on the outside of the drive. These appear to be pretty stiff - more so than the furry bits on my Macbook. Maybe it's because they're new?

Just call and ask that they send the replacement to your home. Not sure if this works for you though, if you ordered in a store.

Me, I keep the old imac until the new one arrives. Made the appointment with fedex to pick up the old imac the day after the supposed delivery window apple says on their order status page.

I had this on my i5 but now it's fine,

#1 make sure you place the disc in/take out straight, it's easy to tilt it toward the back or front

#2 after time the furry bits become a bit softer.

Now I don't get any scratches

I heard on a youtube unboxing video that the sharp aluminium edges of the disc slot were scratching the drives, but I haven't had an opportunity to test this myself.

So maybe new iMac owners could get an old CD and insert it 20-40 time to "break in" the furry bits.
